Hello everyone, for those of you who don’t know me I am Leo, formerly the Class Assistant at ILCA UK and I have been working at World Sailing supporting our sport’s Paralympic Return campaign for almost a year.
Sailing is unique in Para sport in its equitability: It is one of few sports that offer World Championship level competition for all types of Para Impairments: Physical, Vision, and Intellectual.
For the World Sailing Inclusion Championships in Portugal from the 4th to the 10th of October, the ILCA is the chosen equipment for the Intellectual Impairment and Cognitive Impairment categories.
World Sailing has partnered with Viana Sailing, who are kindly providing their charter boats at a fraction of their usual rate, in the acknowledgment that these competitors are fromour Emerging Nations Programme and have very few financial resources. Our current registrations include Pakistan, St Kitts & Nevis, and Trinidad & Tobago for example.
That is why I am appealing to you, the ILCA UK Class, to please consider donating your old ILCA 4 or ILCA 6 Sails,battens, control lines, Tillers & Tiller extensions, to facilitate the participation of these competitors. This equipment will significantly reduce the barrier for entry, and create a real difference in our sport.
At the ILCA UK Nationals at WPNSA, Lisa Anderson(Director of the Executive Office of World Sailing) will be on hand to collect your donated kit. However, if the Nationals do not work for you, please let me know and we will find a solution.
Members of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Board, with whom the final decision of Para Sailing at Brisbane 2032 ultimately rests, will be coming in-person to observe the Inclusion Championships. This is the sailing community’s opportunity to demonstrate to the IPC why Sailing deserves to return to the Paralympics. By having a diverse, strong, and well-presented Intellectual Impairment fleet we will significantly bolster our campaign.
